According to the Brazilian Diabetes Society, 20 million people have diabetes in Brazil. However, it is possible to live well with the condition. Measuring blood glucose and maintaining the correct insulin levels are some of the ways that can help throughout this journey.

Understanding diabetes is the first step toward effective self-care and a balanced life.

And to help you understand the subject better, we spoke with family and community medicine physician Dr. Larissa Miranda, who answered some essential questions about the topic.

What is the difference between type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes is usually genetic.
  • This type is always treated with insulin, medication, meal planning, and physical activity to help control blood glucose levels.
Type 2 Diabetes (90% of cases) is strongly associated with lifestyle.
  • It occurs when the body cannot properly use the insulin it produces, or does not produce enough insulin to control blood glucose levels.
  • It can be managed with physical activity and meal planning. In other cases, insulin and/or other medications are required to control glucose levels.
Gestational Diabetes occurs when blood glucose levels increase during pregnancy:
  • It is essential to take the glucose tolerance test between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. Strict control through diet, exercise, and, when necessary, medication is vital to prevent complications such as excessive fetal growth (macrosomia) or premature birth.
  • In most cases, the condition disappears after delivery, but follow-up care is still required.

Do people with diabetes need to completely eliminate sugar?

Completely eliminating sugar is not possible, as it is present in many foods.

  • Carbohydrates are converted into sugar, and once they enter our body, they are transformed into glucose.
  • Fruits contain fructose, which is also converted into glucose when it enters our body.
Therefore, it is important to pay attention to food labels, as sugar may appear under different names in the ingredient list: sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin, corn syrup, malt syrup, and invert sugar.
Therefore, making good dietary choices is essential for controlling blood glucose and diabetes.

What daily care is essential for people living with diabetes?

  • Diet and Labels: Prioritize whole, minimally processed foods.
  • Exercise and Monitoring: Physical activity helps control glucose levels. If you use insulin, check your blood glucose before and after exercising to prevent hypoglycemia.
  • Monitoring and Prevention: Constant monitoring helps prevent complications. Some causes of hypoglycemia include errors in carbohydrate counting, skipping meals, or unplanned physical activity.

Some possible causes of hypoglycemia:

  • Errors in carbohydrate counting;
  • Skipping a meal or changing meal times;
  • Unplanned physical activity or activity outside your usual routine;
  • Alcohol consumption;
  • Excess medication (review dosages with your healthcare team).

In case of hyperglycemia, seek the nearest healthcare facility.

Taking care of your physical and mental health is essential. Having a support network is also a major advantage in adapting to life with diabetes in a healthy way and maintaining a good quality of life.
