As most of us continue working from home or our workplace has adopted a hybrid model (working from home and in the office), adapting to this new model can still present certain challenges.

Whether it’s the TV series your child is watching or the temptation to grab a snack, there are many distractions at home that you don’t encounter in your usual workplace. On the other hand, working from home is a great opportunity to start practicing healthy habits and establish a new routine that benefits your mental and physical health.

Here are some tips to make the most of your workday at home:

  • Move while you work:

Sitting for long periods of time can be harmful to your health. Take short breaks of at least 1–2 minutes for every hour spent sitting and working. Set an alarm to remind yourself to get up, walk around, or stretch.

  • Exercise:

Do 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Vary your activities to avoid getting bored—walk, run, or cycle. You can also join live-streamed group classes from your gym or find workout videos on YouTube.

  • Stay hydrated:

Start your morning by drinking a glass of water before making your coffee, and always keep a water bottle nearby to remind yourself to drink water throughout the day.

  • Pay attention to the foods you eat:

Instead of allowing yourself to snack throughout the day, have balanced main meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with some healthy snacks in between. It is also important to take a proper lunch break so that you can eat mindfully without distractions.

Working from home presents many new daily challenges, but it also offers new opportunities to help you improve your health.
