What behaviors may indicate that someone is experiencing depression?
With depression, anguish, distress, and hopelessness persist, and the person may find it difficult to adapt to their routine, whether at work, in their studies, or in relationships with other people. Depression can arise from various factors, which is why it is important to consider each person’s life context and investigate what may be contributing to or triggering their distress.
Some signs may include social isolation, loss of interest in things they previously enjoyed, frequent tiredness, changes in sleep, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating, and a frequent feeling of discouragement.
How does depression affect physical health?
Depression can manifest itself through physical health because the body and mind function as an integrated system. Symptoms such as frequent tiredness and changes in sleep and appetite may also be accompanied by muscle pain, headaches, intestinal changes, reduced immunity, decreased libido, and worsening of existing chronic conditions. All of this can make self-care more difficult, especially as the person reduces activities that provide even a minimal sense of pleasure.
What habits can help maintain good mental health?
- Maintain a proper sleep routine, going to bed and waking up at regular times.
- Reduce the amount of time spent on social media.
- Exercise regularly. Physical activity helps reduce stress and regulate mood.
- Set aside moments for leisure and rest during the week.
- Engage in activities that bring pleasure.
- Avoid excessive use of alcohol and other substances.
- Allow yourself to recognize and feel your emotions instead of repressing them.
- Seek professional help when you realize that the difficulties of dealing with everyday demands have become greater than you can handle at that moment.
Care begins when we allow ourselves to talk about how we feel.
Taking care of your mental health is an act of caring for yourself and others.
