The June Red Campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage people about the importance of being a blood donor and reminds us that a single donation can save up to four lives.

And to help you better understand the topic, we spoke with nurse Maria Islane Freitas, who answered some essential questions about the subject.

How often can a person donate blood?

The frequency of blood donation varies depending on sex:

  • Men: every 60 days, up to 4 donations per year.
  • Women: every 90 days, up to 3 donations per year.

 

What precautions should a person take before and after donating blood?

Before:

  • Eat well (avoid fatty foods)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Avoid alcohol for 12 hours beforehand

After:

  • Stay well hydrated
  • Avoid physical exertion for 24 hours
  • Do not consume alcohol on the same day
  • Keep the bandage on for a few hours

 

Who can donate blood and what are the main criteria for becoming a donor?

  • Be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 require authorization).
  • Weigh at least 50 kg.
  • Be in good health.
  • Not have any blood-borne diseases.
  • Be well-rested and have eaten before donating.
