According to the WHO, every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide somewhere in the world, which means that more than 800,000 people lose their lives this way each year.
For this reason, Yellow September was created as a campaign to raise public awareness about suicide and how society can help prevent it.
The causes of suicide are varied. According to the CVV, mental health disorders have been identified in many people who die by suicide or attempt suicide. However, we cannot say that everyone who dies by suicide has a mental health disorder.
We must also remember that suicide can sometimes occur impulsively in response to highly impactful and unexpected life situations, such as the loss of loved ones, abuse, or even financial crises.
We need to understand suicide as a reality that can affect people around us. This makes it easier to recognize when someone may need help and to have open conversations about the subject.
It is important to know that in Brazil, there is an institution that provides emotional support and works to prevent suicide, known as the Center for the Appreciation of Life (CVV). If you need someone to talk to or know someone who does, seeking professional or crisis support can be an important first step.
Therefore, it is important to set prejudice aside and educate ourselves about suicide and ways to prevent it. If you ever experience thoughts of self-harm, or notice signs of this behavior in someone close to you, seek help and alert trusted family members or professionals.
